Providing a safe and caring environment is a priority for Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi. That means all times while students are in our care, including on all bus routes, to and from pick-up and drop-off sites. When students are outside of that care, they do need to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings and be prepared for dangers that may occur.
We have received a report of an incident this week at the Prince Kūhiō Plaza bus stop in which a student was verbally and physically harassed by two juveniles the student recognized from a former school while at and around the mall, following drop-off. The student was able to escape the situation, and now has a plan in place should an incident happen in the future. Our Transportation Department has notified and are currently working with Prince Kūhiō Plaza and our campus security for additional awareness. We have also encouraged ʻohana involved to file a police report given the nature of the harassment. This incident serves as an important safety reminder of why we encourage ʻohana to make the necessary arrangements to be at your child’s bus stop 15 minutes before pick-up and remain until child is safely on board, and 15 minutes before drop-off to assure that your child is not left unattended at any time at the bus pick-up/drop-off site. Your kōkua and aloha for the safety of your child and all children ensures they are prepared in the event they find themselves in an uncomfortable or inappropriate situation. We would also encourage you as ‘ohana, to have the conversations with your child to ensure that they:
